About Project Access

How Project Access Works

Area physicians/dentists agree to see a certain number of patients in their respective practices/facilities free of charge. Participating providers understand that Project Access is not “insurance” and are assured that the patients they are treating have been thoroughly screened for program eligibility.

While new patient referrals are accepted from participating physicians/dentists and all regional human service agencies, a referral is not required. Individuals seeking services can contact Project Access directly. At that time they can expect to complete a phone screening where we will gather base-line information pertaining to their demographic and financial information. At that point, the patient will be notified as to whether or not it appears they will be eligible for the program. Those that do not meet the guidelines are referred to other human service agencies in the area for assistance while a face-to-face interview, is scheduled with one of our eligibility counselors for those who appear to be eligible.

During this face-to-face interview, the patient is required to present supporting documentation for their household’s income. The eligibility counselor will take the time to explain the policies of the program in detail and once everything is verified and patients agree to the program's policies and procedures, the patient is scheduled an appointment with a primary care physician (PCP) who evaluates their current health care need. In some instances, patient are referred to Project Access by a PCP for specialist care.

Each patient is enrolled for 6 months. During this time, the assigned PCP can refer the patient for specialty care as needed. It is the goal of Project Access that during the patient’s initial 6-month enrollment that the patient will have improved health status and access to healthcare without having to utilize area emergency departments for routine care that can be provided in the office setting. In an event where the patient is still in need of services at the end of the 6 month enrollment, but is still ineligible for services through any other programs/insurance coverage plans, the patient may be re-enrolled.
